How far can a memory take you? When he was still a boy, Federico Durand's grandparents took him on an extended trip through the forests in the Southern part of Argentina. To this day, the experience is manifesting itself in his oeuvre, both subconsciously and with delicate deliberation. Already Durand's album- and track-titles are indicative of a love for a lost paradise and the world of children, of a fascination for the small, outwardly meaningless things that make life such an inexplicably wonderful thing: The ecstasy of little flowers, The Cypress's sleep, The Book of magical trees, My little world of paper – magical fairytales live in the branches and roots of the deep, comforting forests these names are conjuring up. And that's actually before you've even heard a single note. Durand's 2010 debut on the renowned Japanese Spekk-imprint fed from the contrast between lo-fi aesthetics, almost shy emotions and high definition textures, navigating oceans of tenderness with a ship made of tiny sounds. On El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas, this year's follow-up for Own Recordings, meanwhile, the symbiosis between intimate field recordings and fragile drones is taking center stage, the equinox of dream and reality manifesting itself in seven pieces of concise dimensions, which nevertheless seem to stretch out into the listener's imagination like an endless field of rolling green hills. Already opener „El pequeño huésped sigue dormido“, on which the arrival and departure of what seems to be a refreshing Summer rainstorm is accompanied by a duet between long, sentimental strings and an unresolved piano melody, is a perfect moment turned into music, a series of blurry snapshots that add up to a vivid mental image. Durand is not the first to tread these acoustic paths, of course. But the conviction with which he delivers this vision – all too easily mistaken for romantic kitsch by lazy ears – makes his soul trip sound like an explorative journey. If you, too, believe that happiness requires little more than beauty and a good cup of tea, then the music of Federico Durand may just be the soundtrack to your life.

El sábado 9 de julio será la presentación de "El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas" (Own Records, 2011) en la hermosa casa de té La Torre en Agua de Oro, Córdoba.

Los esperamos a la tarde para tomar un rico té y esperar el recital de Fede que empezará a las 21:00 hs.

Para los que no conocen Agua de Oro, está sobre la Ruta E53 a poco menos de 50 km de la ciudad de Córdoba, pasando Río Ceballos, Salsipuedes, El Pueblito, El Manzano y camino a La Granja o Ascochinga.

La Torre está ubicada sobre la ruta E 53, en el km 37. En el barrio Solarium Suizo, frente al criadero de iguanas.

Si no, en el pueblo, cualquier persona sabe cómo indicar el camino hacia "la torre".

“El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas”

MÚSICA DE LA NATURALEZA La tecnología ha descubierto una visión del mundo desconocida. Hay cámaras que pueden grabar a un tigre cazar en la oscuridad o fotografiar la radiación que dejó una estrella al desaparecer. Sin embargo, basta con salir al monte, esperar a que empiece a atardecer y cerrar los ojos para dejar que el bullicio de los insectos y la luz entre las hojas de los árboles revelen una vida que casi siempre permanece oculta. Federico Durand ha atrapado ese mundo secreto del bosque que parece latir dentro de “El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas” con una grabadora, pero de nada le hubiera servido si no sintiera el amor que tiene por cada instante de sonido recogido en la montaña y la sensibilidad con que lo arropa en su música. Las grabaciones de campo tienen un efecto hipnótico, casi mágico, sobre los acordes de guitarra y piano que hay enterrados en este disco, como si enredaran las notas, haciéndolas girar, encendiendo colores nuevos en la música. Basta con caminar entre estas piezas, encontrar el lugar donde sentarse y cerrar los ojos para poder verlos.

Si “La siesta del ciprés” (2010) recogía una música evanescente, ingenua, de contornos desdibujados, “El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas” se sirve de un sonido más nítido, iluminado por Taylor Deupree, que lo ha masterizado. Los teclados ceden espacio a la guitarra y el piano en casi todos los cortes y Durand tiende cada acorde, dejando respirar a los demás, llenando el sonido de vetas, grietas y huecos en los que también resuenan restos de música. Cae una tormenta sobre el piano que abre el disco en “El pequeño huésped sigue dormido” y las cigarras y las hormigas mordisquean las guitarras de “Los niños escriben poemas en tiras de papel rojo”: es como si todo sucediera justo cuando lo escuchas, como si él lo estuviese grabando en ese mismo momento. Para cuando las guitarras con las que “Kim” cierra el álbum se apagan sabes que este es uno de los discos más bonitos que escucharás en mucho tiempo. Tendrás que volver a ponerlo una y otra vez porque su sonido no se puede retener, es como tratar de recordar una puesta de sol. Los tonos, la luz, su intensidad, se pierden en la memoria; el cerebro no puede reproducirlos.

La bonne santé artistique du label Own Records s’illustre à nouveau par une doublette de sorties. Rappelons au passage, que la structure fête ses dix ans d’activité. Dans les deux cas, on a affaire à des artistes confirmés voire même chevronnés en ce qui concerne Thomas Méry. Quant à l’Argentin Federico Durand, il sort avec el éxtasis de las flores pequeñas son troisième album.

Pour ce dernier, le chapelet de compositions est imprégné et structuré par des souvenirs provenant de l’enfance de Durand, quand celui-ci, bambin, sillonnait les forêts argentines avec ses aïeux. Illustrant parfaitement la nature d’un souvenir, par essence nébuleux et souvent axé sur des impressions remodelées, les morceaux baignent dans un flou ambient chaleureux, qui se laisse porter par des drones et autres field recordings. Si la maîtrise de l’Argentin pour construire des ambiances bucoliques et nostalgiques est indiscutable, l’écoute de l’album s’avère à double tranchant. En effet, selon l’humeur de l’auditeur, ce dernier s’ébaudira devant ce calme paisible et contemplatif qui se dégage de l’album ou alors le trouvera passablement rasoir et chiant, n’ayant aucune envie d’écouter pour la nième fois l’ouverture d’un nénuphar un doux matin d’été ! Tout est évidemment question de contexte.

Si les deux premiers morceaux donnent cette impression de surplace apaisant et un peu vain, en égrenant des notes au hasard sur des gouttes de pluies, les choses prennent une autre tournure dès elin. Ce bref morceau séduit par la grâce d’une mélodie tangible et fragile tout en gardant le parti pris esthétique de Durand. Sur cette lancée, la casa de los abuelos (la maison des grands-parents) poursuit avec une ligne de piano hésitante, légèrement désaccordée sur un lit des arpèges de guitares, comme pour illustrer le temps qui passe et qui altère les corps, le poids de l’âge aidant. Certes, les plages ambient fonctionnent parfaitement en tant que vignettes sonores du souvenir qu’elles sont censées illustrer comme dans atardecer en las montañas (tombée du jour en montagne) où une langueur s’empare du morceau au travers de drones qui se croisent dans les vallées, tandis qu’un brouillard sonore accompagne le lent mais inexorable obscurcissement. Autre beau moment, kim qui clôt l’album avec simplement une guitare acoustique limpide et des gazouillis d’oiseaux.

En qui concerne Thomas Méry, il n’en est pas à son coup d’essai. Il faut savoir que ce dernier arpente la scène indé française depuis une quinzaine d’années, entre autres en tant que chanteur au sein de Purr qui a laissé, en héritage, l’un des grands albums d’indé français des 90’s avec whales lead to the deep sea, pendant européen des épopées de Slint et de Codeine. Le bonhomme sort son deuxième album solo avec l’aide de plusieurs fidèles collaborateurs. Ce qui frappe d’emblée sur les couleurs, les ombres c’est le timbre de Thomas Méry. En effet, cette voix révèle une trouble ressemblance avec la baudruche Pascal Obispo. Un Obispo débarrassé de tous ses imbuvables tics et dans un registre crédible voire même habité par moments. Mais tels Tim Buckley voire Nick Drake ou encore Gerard Manset, des textes évocateurs et chimériques, pour la plupart en français, malgré quelques passages en anglais, sont déclamés sur des arrangements somptueux et savants, portés par des musiciens au diapason du chanteur-guitariste aux pickings sophistiqués.

Les textes profondément mélancoliques entre confidences et désincarnations impersonnelles font le constat poignant et imagé sur des détails futiles (comme sur du sirop), qui rendent la vie absurde ou, au contraire, méritant d’être vécue, malgré le vertige et la chute que cela peut entraîner. Les six morceaux forment un tout puissamment homogène, qui musicalement se retrouve à cheval entre ce free folk un peu jazzy tel que le pratiquaient Buckley père et Drake, mais aussi des climats d’une profonde musicalité aux confins d’un certain postrock comme celui qui était tissé par, au hasard, Hood, Talk Talk dans sa dernière période ou Matt Elliot. Belle et intemporelle, aux envolées acoustiques impétueuses, avec mention spéciale aux magnifiques parties de cuivres (clarinette, clarinette basse et trompette), la musique transfigure littéralement cette demi-douzaine de compositions automnales. Tel un franc-tireur, Thomas Méry creuse farouchement son sillon personnel.

Nouveau signe d’un attachement tenace à la nature, El Extasis De Las Flores Pequeñas proroge la poésie ensommeillée de La Siesta Del Ciprés, porte un regard tendre sur ce passé où Federico Durand arpentait les espaces verts avec ses grands-parents. Avec mesure et délicatesse, l’Argentin façonne des textures engourdies qui renvoient aux frêles divagations de Chihei Hatakeyama lorsqu’elles occupent l’essentiel de l’espace (Atardecer En Las Montañas), capte des fragments de nature dans ce qu’elle a de plus paisible, récupère des tranches de vie évoquant autant les jardins d’enfants que les portraits de famille fanés. Une guitare, un piano, que les épreuves du temps ou les passages sur bandes magnétiques auront pris soin d’éroder, esquissent des mélodies simples et ajourées, hésitantes et chargées de nostalgie, comme peuvent l’être celles de Bexar Bexar ou Colleen. Avec pareils rapprochements, la fragilité et l’humilité sont immanquablement au rendez-vous. Et la promesse d’une caresse tenue.

Federico Durand is een in Buenos Aires in Argentinië woonachtige muzikant die twee albums maakte, in 2010 werd zijn debuut ‘La Siesta Del Ciprés’ door het Japanse label Spekk uitgebracht en zijn tweede cd ‘El Extasis De Las Flores Pequeñas’ is nu verschenen bij het Luxemburgse Own Records. Toen Federico Durand bij zijn ouders thuis bij toeval verschillende oude foto’s uit jeugd terug vond, kwamen meteen vergeten momenten en vage herinneringen naar boven, o.a. uit de tijd dat hij als kind bij zijn grootouders logeerde die in de bossen in het Zuiden van Argentinië woonden. Op ‘El Extasis De Las Flores Pequeñas’, dat zoveel betekent als de extase van de kleine bloemen, probeerde Federico Durand deze jeugdherinneringen in klank en geluid te vatten. Met veel “field-recordings”, piano, verschillende akoestische snaarinstrumenten en het gebruik van een laptop, creëerde hij bitterzoete miniatuurtjes waarin weemoed en onschuld als mijmeringen weerklinken.

The title of this album, translate as ‘The ecstasy of little flowers’ conveys a sense of the nature of small bright moments that make up the miniature of vast landscapes of joyous endeavor. Argentinian Federico Durand compacts acoustic guitar, piano, field recordings and recording techniques into these moments. The melodies are simple and sparse in their unleashing, lingering on notes, allowing for the resonance to fulfill it’s promise. Field recordings of birds, children at play, rain, incidental sounds of the performer at work are all fleshed out as aspects of the work and manipulated with an ear towards an electro-acoustic sound palette an a dimensional sense of the sound presentation.

El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas was mastered by Taylor Dupree at 12K which explains the masterful spatial aspects in the recordings and how it conveys through the recorded medium. The delicacy and touch of the work itself bears out as intimate, displaying the technique of classical acoustic guitar technique without the emphasis on display of rigour. Rather it simplifies and amplifies subtle movements and intonations to achieve affect. When the introduction of drones appear later in the album, they are long and ponderous with glimmering overlaid melodic touches and sharp tuning. Overall the achievement of beautiful simplicity is a well honed skill here and an approach to be delighted at in any field.

With ‘El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas’, Own Records added another beautiful album to their catalogue. This album is mainly based on guitar, piano and field recordings and is the latest work by the Buenos Aires-based musician Federico Durand. So this album directly follows the beautiful ‘La siesta del ciprés’ on Japanese Spekk label. It comes in a plain white sleeve with the beautiful photograph by Christy Romanick. Mastering engineer of this album was Taylor Deupree.

The introduction of the album ‘El pequeño huésped sigue dormido’ is a wonderful field recording of a rainy day accompanying some (slightly detuned) piano improvisation. This creates a truly peaceful atmosphere that will lead the listener through the complete album. ‘Los niños escriben poemas en tiras de papel rojo’ is maybe one of the finest pieces of the album. You can hear birds, children playing outside – and all this is accompanied by a discrete guitar arrangement, calm and beautiful. ‘Elin’ immediately reminds me of the ‘Film by Federico Durand’ that was the introduction of Ian Hawgood’s ‘Slow Films in Low Lights’ on Home Normal last year. And this contribution by Federico Durand was one of the main reasons why this release was one of the albums of the year 2010 by the way. But let’s get back to ‘El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas’. The title track of the album stands out not just because it is the title track and hence has a special meaning from the artists point of view – it also is a truly beautiful guitar arrangement, an intimate piece of work. With the following ‘Atardecer en las montañas’ Durand delivers a completely processed piece, decent and delicate guitar drones are creating a warm and rich surrounding for some slight distortion and overtones. A perfect musical image of the evening hours in the mountains, surrounded by nature and the late sunbeams when the sun slowly hides behind the ridge. The final piece ‘Kim’ returns to the warmth of this very peaceful ‘Los niños escriben poemas en tiras de papel rojo’. If you think that I’m sort of slobbering over this album it could be true definitely. But honestly: it’s somewhat seriously equitable regarding this wonderful piece of work.

So I don’t want to finish this review without pointing out that ‘El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas’ was album of the month in March 2011 on this site. And you might think that I’m sort of crazy to constitute this at that early point of the year, but I’m kind of sure that this album will appear in the year’s end list of mine, too. Highly recommended!

Federico Durand is een in Buenos Aires in Argentinië woonachtige muzikant die twee albums maakte, in 2010 werd zijn debuut ‘La Siesta Del Ciprés’ door het Japanse label Spekk uitgebracht en zijn tweede cd ‘El Extasis De Las Flores Pequeñas’ is nu verschenen bij het Luxemburgse Own Records. Toen Federico Durand bij zijn ouders thuis bij toeval verschillende oude foto’s uit jeugd terug vond, kwamen meteen vergeten momenten en vage herinneringen naar boven, o.a. uit de tijd dat hij als kind bij zijn grootouders logeerde die in de bossen in het Zuiden van Argentinië woonden. Op ‘El Extasis De Las Flores Pequeñas’, dat zoveel betekent als de extase van de kleine bloemen, probeerde Federico Durand deze jeugdherinneringen in klank en geluid te vatten. Met veel “field-recordings”, piano, verschillende akoestische snaarinstrumenten en het gebruik van een laptop, creëerde hij bitterzoete miniatuurtjes waarin melancholie en onschuld als mijmeringen weerklinken.

Approximately two weeks ago, as I was looking through some boxes in my parents’ house on a rainy late afternoon, I stumbled across pictures of my parents when they were young and a couple more of my sister and me, in various poses, awful outfits (what was our mother thinking?) and diverse places; through the laughter for the absurdity of some moments captured on 35mm (us with matching hats, me running, age four or five, half-naked through a field of weeds holding a stray cat under my arm) I also let some tears escape, realising that childhood memories, or things we thought we’d forgotten and lost forever, are some of the most bittersweet we are to encounter in life.

Federico Durand‘s album El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas, out today on Own Records, is a little bit like that. Recorded in Argentina, mixing acoustic instruments, piano, and field recordings, it is a journey towards the memories of his childhood, a way to press pause and rewind.

Der Argentinier Federico Durand darf der Mediator sein. „El Éxtasis De Las Flores Pequenas“ erzählt musikalisch von einer Reise aus seiner Kindheit in die Wälder Südargentiniens, in die freie, unberührte Natur, mit seinen geliebten Großeltern. Das ist offensichtlich eine der schönsten Phasen seines Lebens gewesen. Man kann das förmlich fühlen, in jeder Sekunde seiner innigen Klangcollage, in der sich zarteste Klavier- und Gitarrentupfer und synthetische Soundscapes vor plätscherndem Regen und allerlei anderen Naturgeräuschen wie Momentaufnahmen umeinander bewegen und Bilder vor dem inneren Auge erscheinen lassen. Federico Durand hat Erinnerungen mit Klängen assoziiert und schafft eine einzigartige Heimeligkeit. Wenn auf dem Eröffnungsstück „El Pequeno Huesped Sigue Dormido“ aus dem Hintergrund ein Husten zu vernehmen ist, blickt man mit Durand zusammen aus dem Fenster in die Ferne, fühlt sich zuhause und geborgen wie in der Obhut einer Person, bei der man sich gut aufgehoben gefühlt hat als man noch klein war. „Los Ninos Escriben Poemas En Tiras De Papel Rojo“ ist mit schemenhaft wahrnehmbarem Vogelgezwitscher und aufgeregten Kinderstimmen wie ein Spaziergang durch eine stille Landschaft, eine Reise zu sich selber, in sein Innerstes; aus einer Zeit, in der für einen selbst noch alles groß, faszinierend und aufregend war, was draußen passiert ist. Und „Elin“ trägt eine kleine Melodie – übrigens die einzige wirkliche Melodie des ganzen Albums – noch tagelang hinter uns her.

Naturromantik; Traumreisen: völlig unumwunden bleibt, dass man für solch ein Album als Zuhörer gemacht sein muss. Eine nicht unbeträchtliche Menge Musikmenschen wird „El Éxtasis De Las Flores Pequenas“ ohne Frage als Eso-Kitsch abtun. Dieses scheinbar lethargische; die Tatsache, dass hier eigentlich musikalisch nichts augenfällig großartiges passiert, muss man zu nehmen wissen: als den Wunsch eines Künstlers, seine Gedanken und inneren Bilder zu vertonen. Die Innigkeit, die Federico Durand in diese Musik legt; die Gefühle, die er in sich trägt, können vermutlich nur von denen nachvollzogen werden, die versuchen, durch seine Augen zu sehen und vielleicht eigene Bilder hinzufügen. Wer das Experiment mitmacht, und wirklich bereit ist, darf sich aber über eine wirklich wundervolle Klangreise freuen, die einem die eigene Kindheit in ihrer Unschuld und Schönheit wieder zu einem kleinen Teil zurückbringt.

I love field recordings. Well used, there's something special about them. They can create beautiful, moving textures that really add to a track. In the large part, Federico has this absolutely nailed, and right from the start, the record is an absolute treat.

El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas has a kind of ramshackle, almost laconic feel to it. Instruments drop in and out beautifully, not particularly worried about whether they complement other instruments around them, but more concerned with the general feel of the sound as a whole. That it does this and yet sounds so ... right, is a real achievement. Even when Federico uses something as potentially tired as rain as a backdrop, the attention to detail and clearly well thought out compositions just work wonderfully.

I love the playing of pretty much everything on this record. The reason it all sounds so great is - I think - because all that playing is about the sense of space, and of stepping around that space rather than simply trying to fill it. It actually sounds to me like those sounds are tumbling in, a sense of the accidental. There's a real sense of understanding that it's as much about what you do play as what you don't. Of course everybody knows that - I'm hardly writing anything new here, but the difference is that's it's one thing to know that, and another to do it. It takes quite a lot of bravery and belief in what you're doing to give your sounds the space they need and let tracks breathe. This record really gets that.

So what you get on the record is storms, tumbling guitar, lovely simple drones, spacious, almost distractedly picked guitar parts that sound something like Gustavo Santaolalla would play, and varying field sounds across the recordings, that almost without exception work really well within the pieces. Even the piano - which can often sound quite clinical and detached on some records - sounds like it's being played on a one hundred year old piano that's just been tuned for the first time in years and is finally sharing it's sounds with you. In short, this record just sounds, real, heartfelt ... authentic.

As favourites tracks go, I gravitate towards Los niños escriben poemas en tiras de papel rojo, La casa de los abuelos and Kim at the moment, but all the tracks are great and it's a consistently high quality recording. I could have done without a couple of (what I think are) bird sounds on El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas, which distract from the feel of that track as a whole, but that's pretty much the only criticism I have, and a really minor one.

Simply put, this record is quite, quite wonderful. Highly recommended.

After the superb La Siesta Del Ciprés released last year on Spekk, Buenos Aires-based Federico Durand returns with El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas, a 35-minutes subdued and beautiful evocation of time spent as a child with his grandparents to the woods in the Argentinean South. Using a reduced and evocative sound palette made of piano and acoustic guitar, augmented with field recordings collected in the gardens of Buenos Aires, Durand conjures memories of his lost grandparents’ home, in a delicate and poetic study of nostalgia and childhood.

As the rain pours outside, the gently reverberating piano notes of opener El pequeño huésped sigue dormido slowly unfurl and are soon accompanied by a quiet acoustic guitar, suggesting a lonely day spent at home, flicking through a worn out photo-album of sepia-tinged pictures. Nothing mournful or sad, just vignettes of long-gone moments, resurfacing and transporting the listener to their own childhood. Subsequent numbers are somehow more oneirical – the melodic motifs being quite distant, suggesting fragments of memories that fold into each other, as in a super-8 film of past holidays. At other times like in Elin for example, the same piano phrase keeps looping, its meaning becoming all the clearer as the piece progresses, as if one could see at last why this particular memory had stuck for so long in our head, giving a sudden new insight into our own story.

Durand has taken great care when recording his instruments, conjuring a necessary distance that perfectly matches his intentions. The piano in La Casa De Los Abuelos is presented through a sonic veil that achingly underlines the nostalgic mood of the piece. In the title track, the guitar is processed through echo and delay-pedals in such a way it suggests faded-out memories, as seen in a shadowbox. Sounds of hands gliding between chord shapes on the guitar’s neck are isolated and amplified, and seems to remove themselves from the interwoven melodies.

Each track tells its story ever so slowly, like a poem being read out loud, progressing at its own unhurried pace. In Atardecer en las montañas, piano and guitar congeal into a droning mass of majestic beauty that drift ecstatically on the surface of a sunlit pond. The delicate touches of xylophone-like instruments add a very interesting contrast to the track that clearly stands out as the most blissful piece on the album. In the closing Kim, Durand’s reverberated guitar comes back in a simple and very evocative chord progression that loops atop processed field recording and gently saturated undulating drones, as a way of letting go of those long-gone memories of childhood, grateful that such moments ever existed.

El éxtasis de las flores pequeñas is a work of extreme sensibility that avoids unnecessary sentimentality or cliched evocations – Federico Durand unveiling its narrative through delicate strokes of unassuming beauty.

Per quanto -coi tempi che corrono- sia sempre più difficoltoso riuscire ad emergere tra l’ingente quantitativo di uscite che affollano il mercato con famelica ricorrenza, “La Siesta del Ciprès” dell’argentino Federico Durand -sotto licenza Spekk Records- appare alle nostre orecchie come uno dei più onesti e toccanti manifesti in termini di ambient music da qualche mese a questa parte.
Per apprezzarne in pieno i meriti é sufficiente ritirarsi all’abbandono di fronte al senso di equilibrio che predomina la struttura del disco.
Melodie appena sbuffate che pescano ispirazione e delicatezza dalle fasi del sonno -così forti di controllo maniacale del processing- a smuovere con discreta eloquenza i sensi dell’ascoltatore. La sensazione è un pò quella di voler prendersi cura di una bellezza, gestita senza fare troppi clamori.
Una musica che da facile diventa difficile (“La Siesta Del Ciprés”) quando costringe la lentezza alle estreme conseguenze (“El Mundo Secreto Della Montana”), facendosi carico di sprigionare microsuoni dal mondo dei sogni à la Colleen (“Mi Pequeno Mundo De Papel”) o delicati autismi in sincrono Celer (“Luna”).
D’altronde, quando la sindrome da arte generativa è dietro l’angolo (“Los Alerces Del Patio”) Brian Eno si limita ad essere uno soltanto tra le tante referenze possibili, colto in fragrante tra piccole solitudini a sistema binario (“Pudu Tu Nombre Es Tobias”) o una forma di gentilezza meditativa capace di riscattare svolazzi impressionistici a mezz’aria (“Nos Alejamos De La Casa Sobre La Nieve”).

SPEKK’s latest release still has me gasping for breath and collecting myself after listening through frequently since my purchase earlier this summer. The album, by as of yet unknown artist to me, Federico Durand, is an adventurous, dreamy journey into the secret sleep of cypress trees – and at masterpiece at that in its centering around a much-favoured concept here at Soundscaping, music and the experience of listening to music falling asleep. Some may recall our reviews of Slaapwel and over time have come to understand yours truly has a special appreciation for such music and its meditative effects.

Federico Durand is an Argentinian musician who cites an interest in the resulting sensations of listening to music while falling asleep, and that state where you exist in between wake and sleep, as captured by the Spanish word ‘duermevela’. In this state, a world of melodies, insights and memories opens to us, and coined by Durand himself, one such world is the secret world of the sleep of the cypresses.

The listener is treated to extremely soothing soundscapes of rustling in majestic treetops, a cacophony of resident cacadas and the generally, magical and fantastic feeling of something wonderful surrounding century-aged trees. The world of the cypress has witnessed ages of events untold, and in entering their world as portrayed by Durand, we partake as listener in these recollections of life in passing. From start to finish, this album feels really connected and well-narrated, neither demanding nor too passive. Instead its meandering tones allows the listener to enter their own meditative slumber and marvel at the rich and organic textures of Durand’s sonic pallette. One must feel a bit sorry for Durand and the apparently slow recording process, due to work on an over 10 year old PC, yet when listening to the result it must definitely be a reward after all that slow work pieceing together analog and digital sounds including cassette tape sources out of the musician’s fascination with the rustique. This is simply aural seduction, sleep-inducing and SPEKK at their best – breath-taking!

El viernes 23 de julio, a las 21 horas, Federico Durand se despide de su disco "La Siesta del Ciprés" en la casa de té La Torre, en Agua de Oro.

El disco, editado por SPEKK, ha sido descripto por la legendaria revista española Rockdelux como "ese velo blanquecino, una mezcla de ambientes y sonidos de muestra, teclas de juguete y el arrullo de cintas de casete que descubre un mundo en calma, virgen, de una belleza frágil, tan perfecta que parece a punto de romperse".

Los esperamos a la tarde para tomar un rico té y esperar el recital de Fede que empezará a las 21:00 hs.

Para los que no conocen Agua de Oro, está sobre la Ruta E53 a poco menos de 50 km de la ciudad de Córdoba, pasando Río Ceballos, Salsipuedes, El Pueblito, El Manzano y camino a La Granja o Ascochinga.

La Torre está ubicada sobre la ruta, en el km 47 y 1/2. En el barrio Solarium Suizo, frente al criadero de iguanas.

Federico Durand oriented his La siesta del ciprés album around the experience of listening to music while falling asleep, and cites the Spanish word ‘duermevela' to describe that foggy, in-between state where one is not quite awake nor asleep. Anyone who's experienced that—and who hasn't?—will know already that it induces a heightened receptivity and sensitivity that's conducive to dreamlike transport and that allows one to enter into a state of reverie with no effort whatsoever. Using a ten-year-old PC, Durand translates that experience into sonic form by fashioning limpid pools of sine tones, quiet tinkles, whistles, and washes that evoke tranquil dreamscapes where innocence and wonder reign in equal measure (one track is even titled “Luna”). Though the resources are modest (in addition to analog and digital production methods, cassette tapes form part of the source material used to generate the pieces) and the melodies simple, the results are beautiful, with the album's eight settings sounding like music designed to accompany some magisterial and magical fairy tale. Breathing as softly as a sleeping infant, the lullaby-like closer “Pudu, tu nombre es Tobias?” is without a doubt the prettiest piece of music that's been heard in these parts for a long time. The liner notes credit Durand with “small melodies” but there's nothing small about the entrancing music captured on the thirty-six-minute release.

"Music for a nap" produced by Federico Durand from Argentina. His debut album sounds like if watching a dreamy fairytale processing various instruments into sine wave-like tones. Simply beautiful and touching.

At the time I was creating "La siesta del ciprés" I was very interested, and still am, in the sensations produced by listening to music while falling asleep. In Spanish, the word "duermevela" names that instant when we are awake and not asleep; a territory of fog and extreme lucidity. Listening to music in "duermevela" makes us enter the world of melodies, of insights and memories; the world of La siesta del ciprés. For La siesta del ciprés I worked for a long time with an old PC, which was over ten years old. Accordingly, the recording process was very slow and arduous, but rewarding with time. The album became a search of simplicity as craft. Sounds of cassette tapes reinforce, as an allegory, my imagination of beauty and love to rusticity.

Al despertar, la sangre derramada era una cuna nutricia donde tallos ambarinos crecían en manojos, lirios color durazno, iridiscentes, del tamaño de una bellota. Después, bailaron alrededor de las flores, de los hongos crespos festoneados de azul y declamaron poemas hasta desfallecer. ‘Slow Films In Low Light’ is a collection of remixes and re-workings by friends and artists from my now deleted album ‘Soundtrack To A Film In My Head Which Will Never Get Made’. The original album was released on the lovely Rope Swing Cities but I decided I wanted it to be a temporary release given the nature of the album. RSC and I decided to do a small release to coincide with the original, as a limited run CD-R featuring re-workings and remixes of the pieces by friends, namely The Remote Viewer, Geskia!, Ten and Tracer and Pan Am Scan.

Over time it became apparent that this project needed to spread its wings, and with lots of support from the lovely Yasuhiko Fukuzono (Aus), and other close friends, I decided to ask more friends to join in with the project. I’m so lucky that all the friends I wanted and asked agreed to be involved, creating highly unique pieces from the original sources (sometimes changing them completely). As such I suddenly found myself with this amazing album, featuring past, present and future Home Normal, Tokyo Droning and Nomadic Kids Republic artists and good friends.

ALL the proceeds from this release will go to The Archway Foundation (http://www.archwayfoundation.org.uk/), a UK charity who serve those hurt by loneliness.
