#1. Federico Durand – A Través Del Espejo
This delightful album was released on 12k early in the year, and I kept listening to it all year. (My wife liked it too, which is far from guaranteed with the more experimental fringes of my listening.) A childlike celebration of tiny, fragile sounds, and a reminder of what can be destroyed by noise and bombast, this album offers a series of delicate meditations on the vulnerable beauty of sound. Durand’s Jardín de invierno(on Spekk) deserves honorable mention in the same vein, but it was this earlier release that captivated my ears the most this year.

Federico Durand – Rockdelux (2016)

THE MAGICAL PATH
As a craftsman, Federico Durand has been refined carving of his melodies as if they were glass beads. Manufactured from cooing of old cassette tapes, keyboards and music boxes, sound reveals a world of innocent beauty and appeased that seems to run like a story.
As a craftsman, Federico Durand has been refined carving of his melodies as if they were glass beads. Manufactured from cooing of old cassette tapes, keyboards and music boxes, sound reveals a world of innocent beauty and appeased that seems to run like a story.
The barrio de Recoleta neighborhood barricade themselves against shortages plaguing Buenos Aires and the rest of Argentina. Its monumental facades are remnants of commercial splendor of the early twentieth century. It is July 2014 and Federico Durand guides me among those stately streets that empty into a huge palatial square, American scale. He finds it hard to contain his excitement: only recently has returned from Japan, where he has shared kilometers, tea and hours of music with Stephan Mathieu, Tomoyoshi Date, Chihei Hatakeyama, Corey Fuller and Taylor Deupree, who seems determined to release an album in which it leads Durand engaged for months. In the two years that have passed since that afternoon, Federico’s wife has given birth to her first child, and he has left his job as a professor of literature at a school and has left Buenos Aires to settle with his family in a small house in the mountains of the province of Cordoba. In that time releases of his have also seen the light: “Winter Garden” (Spekk, 2016) and “A Través del Espejo” (12k, 2016), that album was talking about then, curiously shares title with one of the themes of “The star asleep “(White Paddy Mountain, 2014). ‘Some of what was shown and hiding in’ The Sleeping Star ‘blooms in’ Through the Looking Glass’. On the one hand, the doze of the first evening star; on the other, the world of mirrors. The starry sky is a mirror in which we can look, “says Federico. “The court named the album is very old. I found it on a cassette with my portastudio four track when I was organizing the move to our new home in the mountains. All I did was transcribe such to the computer. I do not remember when I recorded it, but the day I discovered it and I pressed ‘play’ I knew his almost magical sound was a message that I had sent me years ago, without realizing it. It was the thread I was pulling up to make it appear the whole plot. The discs are revealed thus very slowly. Everything is appearing. I have that faith.”
Federico has been defining a world of porcelain through his music. His records are spaces of beauty as illusory as innocent, that part of a moment of epiphany that gives a sense, a narrative, his sound poetry. Both “The Emerald Pond” (Spekk, 2014) as “The language of the Fireflies” (Desire Path, 2013), “The Book of magic trees” (Home Normal, 2012) or “Ecstasy of small flowers” ( Own, 2011) arose from memories and visions, giving the nature of an intangible mystery. All refer to the same search for a moment of light and purity. They are pieces of the same mosaic, variations on an ancient melody, multiplied in the infinite reflections of a trinket. Federico thinks: “For me, music is a sacred space. It is the garden where I lose myself and find myself again. I learned that to make music must listen. And, as I wanted Keats, I must be true to my imagination; poetry, creation, must come as naturally as the tree gives leaves “.
“A Través del Espejo” delves into a clean-up exercise in which Federico, who has stopped resorting to field recordings, takes some time. “Every day I think more in the splendor of small, in essence,” he proclaims. Its evocative power spread even images aroused titles of pieces as “lanterns along the lagoon” or “Cricket nacre”, helping to color the story. “I always felt fascination with mirrors that reflect and also watch what they show,” he admits. “The album title can also refer to Lewis Carroll and Alice, but the truth is that during the time when the recording was obsessed with the experience of facing two mirrors: as in a ‘loop, the image is repeated to infinity , becoming greener and diffuse. I wanted to experience mirrors that universe through sound. ”
“Winter Garden” owes its title to favorite Federico space at home in the mountains. That’s where he prefers to work on his music. It is his most delicate disk and a step in the essentialism that seems doomed his music, like a dandelion seed dissolving into the morning air.
That trip to Japan two years ago also led “Magical Imaginary Child” (White Paddy Mountain, 2015), a shared Chihei Hatakeyama record that Federico expanded a circle of collaborations that includes projects with Tomoyoshi Date (Melody) or Nicholas Szczepanik (Every Hidden Color). “I Chihei staying at home and later made a series of recordings. Between each session we drank coffee in the garden of his house, which has mossy stones and the kami of a frog. Your neighborhood is quiet on the outskirts of Tokyo place, “recalls Frederick, before recounting how he rescued some dedicated to his maternal grandfather takes, collected in” Music for Manuel “(Hibernate, 2015):” My grandfather Manuel was my best friend . It was Almeria and tell me stories about Spain, his work as an aircraft propeller mechanic for Aerolineas Argentinas. It took me first to the forests of southern Argentina and showed me a way to see that, thank God, still lingers and guide me in everything I do. He had a unique imagination and sensitivity, also a great sense of humor. He lost his parents when he was very young, but never talked about it. ”

"A través del espejo" reviewed by Obskure Mag (France)
Text by Oliver Bernard

"A través del espejo" (12k) reviewed by Neural, Italia
"Federico Durand is an Argentinian composer who is well known for a series of refined and delicate releases on labels such as Spekk, Own, and Desire Path. The seminal idea of A Través Del Espejo dates to 2014 when Durand participated in a Japanese tour with other 12K artists, sharing music and ideas throughout the tour and developing an intimate approach to sounds. Once the artist had developed broken melodies using cassette recorders as an instrument, with loop-machines (such as the Roland Space Echo or Electro Harmonix 2880) he began to meticulously accumulate sequences and treatments. The soundscapes, like singular images iterated through two mirrors placed face-to-face – acquire a particularly dreamy and meditative appeal and turn in a loop that flows into infinity. Field recordings peek between the grooves too: a woman speaks with a child, natural sounds, auditory catches of daily life in a village, abstract narratives that leave us slipping into a parallel world. Durand is very attentive to detail, both to spontaneous audio emergences, and to the natural sounds made by machines, crackles and other sounds that appear here as an unexpected gift. The lullabies are very hypnotic, and these resonate with alchemical vibrations, patiently calibrated by the author, who skillfully organizes every minimal element, every harmony, every millimetric overlapping of tonal events. The result combines the quietest moments and inspired harmonies, nostalgic atmospheres and poetic rêveries: memories that floats in the ether, engraved in an accomplished minimalista."

Interview by Loop (Chile)
"I think that listening to music half-asleep (in our bed, on public transport, during a nap) can regain our childlike sence of wonder and even re-live past experiences. Repetition, beautiful melodies in a loop, guide us during the numbness towards a dark and light-filled zone.”

Dziesięć kompozycji z „A Través del espejo” to podróż w świat onirycznych drobinek dźwiękowych. Nienachalnie pojawiający się szum z taśm magnetofonowych (The Roland Space Echo), jedynie wzmaga to delikatne uczucie, a także stanowi punkt wyjścia do tworzenia kolejnych warstw. Argentyńczyk bazując na analogowym szumie i zarejestrowanych ruchach powietrza kreuje swój własny kalejdoskop brzmień, w którym słyszymy dźwięki liry, przetworzonego fortepianu, dzwonków, różnych zabawek i elektronicznych efektów.

A Través Del Espejo
12k, 2016

Federico Durand「A Través Del Espejo」〜

Wonderful review by A Closer Listen
Federico Durand - A través del espejo (12k)
Loops and lullabies cover the mattress of Federico Durand‘s A Través del Espejo (Through the Mirror). The title refers to mirrors that face one another, creating endless reflections; the music provides an aural version of this effect. If one were unaware of their genesis, one might mistake these loops for wind chimes, which repeat without seeming repetitive. In fact, they include toys, bells, tape loops and found objects, which offer the soothing predictability of a baby’s plastic mobile while weaving a tapestry that is far more complex.
The early tracks follow this template, and for a while it seems as if Durand is content to let the loops turn and interact, creating unexpected harmonies. The most memorable include the start-and-stop of “Linternas junto a la laguna (Lanterns beside the lake)” and the twinkling “Diorama”. Warm and soothing, these tracks operate as sonic nightlights, offering safety and reassurance. But just as one is getting used to the album’s tone, it changes.
The irony of the track listing is that the album works as a sleep aid until it reaches the track titled “Hora de dormir (Time to sleep)”. But that’s okay, as this is also the set’s most endearing piece. A mother says goodnight to her happy child, while someone in the background imitates a wolf. When they start to sing, chamingly off-key, Daddy joins along (if only for a note). The intimacy of this track is its strength; it’s a window into the artist’s home, an invitation to share a private joy. If this doesn’t win one over, nothing will. From this point on, the loops and lullabies return, carrying the listener down the river of Lethe and through the cave of Hypnos. Goodnight, sleep tight, everything will be all right. (Richard Allen)

"A través del espejo" reviewed by Fluid Radio
A Través Del Espejo is another highly accomplished album from composer Federico Durand, his first on 12k. Whilst employing a similar palette of instruments and techniques to previous (excellent) albums like El libro de los árboles mágicos, this collection seems to look less to the forest, hills and skies, instead radiating a warmer domesticity.
Bell-like sounds and scrapes feel close to the ear, close to the hand – you can almost imagine (and at times, hear) Durand reaching for small sounding objects, using microphones as instruments, pushing looping pedals, coaxing gentle collages out of his chosen ingredients.
Grain (whether sound or film), music boxes, glockenspiels, are sometimes associated with a particular strand of uncritical nostalgia, the same one that gives us ‘retro’ filters for smartphone pictures (perhaps an argument for another day) but there is none of that here; instead Durand gives us ten loose but perfectly formed miniatures that frame a sense of home as both domestic and dream-like.
Highlights could be the crystal clear high end chiming loop at the centre of Diorama, or the burbles and clicks of Canción de la Vía Láctea (Milky Way Song). Indeed, the whole second half of the album is particularly strong, seeming to swell outwards and upwards in a way that confirms Durand as a quiet talent, making the best music of his career so far. A Través Del Espejo is a thing of restrained wonder, a love song to home, hearth and the warmth of magnetic tape. I can’t wait to hear what’s next. – Highly recommended.

A beautiful review form Japan
hammered with a black pencil)

Federico Durand - A Través Del Espejo
(12K)
Vital.

FEDERICO DURAND - A TRAVES DEL ESPEJO (CD by 12K)
By now you must be familiar with the name Federico Durand, with his releases on Spekk, Own and Desire Path, either solo or with the duo Melodia. Apparently, like other musicians from Argentina, he's big in Japan and plays a lot of concerts over there. In 2014 he bumped into Taylor Deupree, head honcho of 12K and became friends and that friendship now brings us this album of new solo pieces, all inspired (apparently as always) by his family. The cover lists all of his instruments, which makes an interesting read: "Auris lyre hammered with a black pencil, synthesizer, piano, music boxes, Roland Space Echo RE-201, Ehx 2880, Mackie 402VLZ4, hokema, little objects, crystal cups bowed with a penknife, Koshi chime, Fostex X18, contact microphone, minidisc, Sony TCM-200DV, owl of wood, tape loops, scissor and masking tape"; I guess it sums up his love for small objects and all things analogue. I understand also that much of what Durand does is hands-on: playing all of this with his two hands and looping stuff on the spot, thus creating this very intimate sound his music always seem to have. More than before it seems we now hear snippets of voices, maybe from around his own house, children voices. It is perhaps a reminder of home-life when he is on the road? For me it's also another reminder: that of the music of Dominique Petitgand, who was also an avid taper of domestic life, and who also used small instruments around these home recordings; there is however one distinction and that is that for Petitgand it was almost obligatory to use them in every track, whereas Durand uses it more sparsely. For him the sound of his 'toys' play the most crucial role, and it makes his work less of a radio-play and it seems to be using a bit more melody, which he loops around and creates beautiful hissy pieces of music with. Sometimes, such as in 'Linternas Junto A La Laguna (Lanterns beside the lake)', the cassette hiss forms even the most substantial part of the composition but usually it's a few sparse notes on the piano, a bow playing a small object to create some overtones, and everything pitched up and down, to form a web of small tones, intertwining with each other. All of this is a highly natural setting, free from digital processing or other computer tricks. In the official world of music journalism one would say 'honest' music. I don't believe in such notions. But I'd say this is highly personal music, without caring too much about 'styles', 'trends' or 'scenes' and this is some damn fine release. (FdW)

A beautiful review of "A través del espejo"
Argentinian composer Federico Durand marks his debut release for 12K with A través del espejo. A glistening ambient daydream spun through crackling casette recorders, various small instruments, toys, bells and the fuzzy echoes turned air recordings that whirred softly in the background as he carefully crafted each track.
The ten track titles are talk enough; Recuerdos en Super 8 (Memories on Super 8), Linternas junto a la laguna (Lanterns beside the lake) or Hora de dormir (Time to sleep), each a small sunlit signpost into Durand’s oh-so-sparse instrumental world.
Babies coo-ing and children singing are the sole voices, making just one appearance on Hora de dormir. But they’re half-heard, just audible beneath the airy crackle and singular melody line. A dream or a memory, but a comforting one. Laced in nostalgia but defiantly anti-twee thanks to the album’s seriously slowwwwww pace: you’re too busy floating (or falling) to worry about anything.
Experimental and soft, lullaby material for all ages, A través del espejo is a glorious demonstration of the discipline and patience Durand exercises inside his toy-box cornucopia of odd machines and found sounds; a dreamworld in itself.

Beautiful review by Music Won't Save You (Italy) & Album of the week
FEDERICO DURAND – A través del espejo
(12k, 2016)*
stille acustiche, field recordings e micro-suoni assortiti, giustapposti
(“Mirador en la montaña (Viewpoint In The Mountain)”, “Linternas junto a
(“El jardín encantado (The Enchanted Garden)”). Nell’universo
combinano in molecole aleggianti in ambienti ovattati e sognanti
in un altrove spazio-temporale (“Hora de dormir (Time To Sleep)”).
Solo i pulviscolari detriti atmosferici

12k is happy to present the debut release on the label from Argentinian composer Federico Durand who has had a series of amazing releases on labels such as Spekk, Own, and Desire Path. Federico and 12k crossed paths on a tour of Japan together in 2014 where the personal friendships among the artists and the label are such a part of what 12k is about. Sharing music and ideas throughout the tour led to an invite to make an album.
It’s no accident that Federico’s music has a dusty air of nostalgia surrounding it. It has always been a very personal affair. Songs inspired family, local life and the world around him are woven by hand with a selection of very physical instruments. He works like a craftsman, piecing together fragments of sound from cassette recorders, small instruments and loopers and creates music that’s as softspoken as he is. No pretenses, no disguises, just the most honest and down-to-earth music that can be made. Broken melodies spinning from tape reels, the sounds of bells and small found objects being played with care... The music is as beautiful as it is introspective, like a small window of antique glass looking right into Federico’s soul.
In his own words:
“A través del espejo in Spanish means “Through the mirror”. I am fascinated with the experience of putting a mirror in front of another: as a miracle, the image turns in a loop that flows into infinity. Loops in the mirror get less clear with each repetition, the color becomes diffuse and greener. When these loops turn into a lullaby we can enter the other side of the mirror: a place of delight and insight.
I always make simple melodies as they are born free. In many pieces, I use cassette recorders as an instrument that play friendly with others such as piano, lyre, toys, bells or effects. I enjoy the possibilities of cutting tape and making loops, reversing, and even using many tape recorders at the same time making air recordings of the sound. The Roland Space Echo or 2880, which are loop-machines themselves, match perfectly with this way of working.
When I see an emboridery I enjoy both the front and back where a mysterious, invisible world suddenly appears. For this reason, I am grateful to the natural sounds made by the machines, the crackle of loops and other sounds that appear while working, as an unexpected gift.
A través del espejo is a dream of beauty, A love of handcrafted music.”
